Photographing The Dark Tower

Geoff Moore on Sat 01 June 2024

A rare break in the UK’s weather opened up the chance to capture something extraordinary: the Milky Way arching over the historic Daymark Tower near Dartmouth, Devon.

Capturing the Galactic Core at Devon’s Historic Daymark Tower

When a rare clear night appeared on the UK’s forecast, it felt like a perfect opportunity for a night shoot on the south coast. Mark and I seized the moment, packing up our gear and heading to the Daymark Tower near Kingswear in Dartmouth, Devon. Our goal? To capture the Milky Way and the Galactic Core as they rose above this iconic coastal landmark.

The Daymark Tower, an 80-foot-high octagonal beacon, has stood proudly since 1864 and is visible from miles around. Originally constructed as a navigational aid for seafarers approaching Dartmouth Harbour, its distinctive shape and purpose were the result of Charles Seale Hayne, a key figure on the Dartmouth Harbour Commission. His vision for improving harbor access led to the tower's construction, and for over a century, it has guided those at sea. Today, its architectural beauty and seaside surroundings make it a compelling destination for landscape and night photographers alike.

Located along the scenic South West Coast Path, the tower is easily accessible by foot from Froward Point or via a short walk from Brownstone Car Park. Surrounded by peaceful fields with views stretching over the sea, it’s a spot that combines historical allure with natural beauty, creating an atmospheric backdrop ideal for nighttime photography.

Our all-night adventure beneath the stars was both exhilarating and exhausting. With nowhere to rest and hours spent standing on cold concrete, the night was as physically demanding as it was creatively rewarding. But when the Milky Way arched over the Daymark, and the Galactic Core came into view, every discomfort felt worthwhile. The quiet of the night, the stunning cosmic display, and the timeless Daymark standing tall created images—and memories—we won’t soon forget.

You can experience the shoot for yourself through the supporting video here. It covers the challenges of the night and includes other captures from this unforgettable location. I hope you enjoy it and, as always, let me know what you think!
